Do You Want to Build a Wooden Garden Arbor Easily?

Wooden Garden ArborsWooden garden arbors are an architectural feature that invites people from one area of the grounds to another. They might be a transition from the lawn to a secluded garden area, or a walk-through between the vegetable patch and the pathway to a kitchen.

Building an Arbor

The basic configuration is two sides with a top, and the idea that a wooden arbor could be any size, any design, and made from any type of lumber is part of the attraction with designing and building wooden garden arbors.

Building an arbor is not much different than building other garden features such as a gazebo or a trellis.

The posts should be set in concrete footings, and depending on the style of the roof, there may be a header system that supports the overhead trellis, or combines in some way to form the trellis. The overhead could be flat, pitched or arched, and the spacing of the lattice might be wide or narrow.

Materials Needed

Most likely, the type of materials you select will dictate some of these design details, and the existing architectural theme of the property will probably influence your design as well. With this being said, it’s clear the process of building wooden garden arbors begins with the design and the selection of the materials. From that point, the systems for the assembly can be implemented into the plan.

The post-to-header connections might be one area where the design could be further expressed. If the wood you’ve chosen is smooth stock, the connections could be made using blind-bolts in order to maintain the uniform appearance.

If the materials are turned or distressed, the posts could be fastened to the headers by driving wood dowels, in order to maintain this type of appearance. In addition, these attachments can be employed throughout the assembly, and connect the overhead trellis, as well as any lattice that might be included on the sides of wooden garden arbors.

Design Options

Another design option could be stone veneer that would add architectural accent at the post bases. The veneer will wrap the posts, and could extend to any height that suits the design, from a few courses at the base, to full height that reaches the underside of the header.

There are a number of materials that can be employed to accent the type of wood that’s used. In addition, stone, flagstone, brick or slate can be used as the foot pad within wooden garden arbors.

The Finish

The finish that’s chosen for wooden garden arbors is equally important since it will finalize the design. Painting an arbor means there will come a time when re-painting is necessary. However, certain high-end installations favor a pristine, whitegarden feature.

Other installations might suggest a solid or transparent stain as the finish. Either of these are likely to soften in time, and begin to blend with the tones of the garden.

Some arbor designs feature a gate with spaced balusters that maintain the trellis effect. Other wooden garden arbors are designed as intimate seating areas, with a bench or a swing suspended under the trellis. Designing one of these arbors is nothing short of an exciting endeavor.
