Wooden Row Boat Plans
There are numerous wooden row
boat plans that are fairly easy to obtain, and most are suitable for constructing a row boat from raw
stock. However, some plans are generated from overseas and as such, are dimensioned in metric
calculations.
If you’re familiar with the metric system, this won’t be a concern. The important thing is to have a design
that’s appealing as well as functional, and to have the descriptions and calculations in a language that’s easy to
interpret.
Elements of Boat Building
Whether you’re developing wooden row boat
plans, or evaluating a set in order to generate a list of materials, you’ll need to be familiar with the
elements of boat building, and the assembly systems that are most often used by boat builders.
Some of these practices have been in use for decades, and the basic theory of floatation for quite a while
longer. In short, the boat has to float and it has to stay together when it's in the water, so the plans must
convey how to accomplish this. As you get into the plans, you’ll find many of the components and pieces have a
unique configuration that might not apply to another part of the craft.
Row Boat Mechanics
For example, pieces that form the hull framework will be shaped differently for the bow, than they are for the
stern.
The bottom of a row boat may appear flat, but the better designs will have a slight curvature to the bottom for
smoother boating in choppy waters.
Since shaping a curved or arched piece requires a slightly larger piece of material, the wooden row boat plans
could have a note in this regard, to aid the boat builder when preparing the list of materials.
Good Row Boat Plans
A good set of wooden row boat plans will most
often include some assembly steps that are geared to ensure the critical pieces are attached correctly. Gluing the
bottom skin to the hull frame before the seat planks are in place, could inhibit a good attachment of the seat
supports.
If, for some reason, the wooden row boat plans do not have these steps, the assembly can be divided into a
number of phases. This will simplify matters and the builder will begin to realize a degree of logic in the
assembly.
List of Tools Needed
Another element that should be included in the boat plans is a list of the tools that are required to build the
craft. Of course, the right tools are essential in obtaining the correct shapes, as well as making sound
attachments.
These types of suggestions from the plan maker are often the difference between a good set of wooden row
boat plans, and a set that might not be of use to anyone but the most experienced builder.
Sealing of Hull
The final element in the construction of a boat is the sealing of the hull. Whether this is done using an epoxy
resin with fiberglass, or a system of epoxy paint, is a determination for the builder.
Boats that might be used exclusively in fresh water are not subject to the same elements as those used in salt
water. Where the boat could be used in either condition, the wooden row boat plans should include options for
sealing the hull.
